October 28th: Joseph and Marie Bunel
Lecture 2: Joseph Bunel was a Haitian diplomatic envoy who visited Philadelphia in 1798 and who is generally regarded as the first black ambassador to the United States‹except that he was not. His unique role as Louverture and Dessalines¹s white ambassador, along with that of his wife Marie (who was black and yet remarkably uninvolved in the Revolution), show us that, when it came to Haiti¹s racial politics, nothing was as simple as it seemed.
