St. Louis native Diane E. Davis is Charles Dyer Norton Professor of Regional Planning and Urbanism at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and chair of its Department of Urban Planning and Design.  Her research interests include the politics of urban development policy, socio-spatial practice in conflict cities, and the relations between urbanization and national development. Author of multiple books, including most recently Cities and Sovereignty: Identity Conflicts in the Urban Realm (I2011), Davis is currently writing about the relations between spatial practice and insurgent urbanism, the deployment of design and planning interventions to reduce urban violence, the role of police in urban governance, and new manifestations of urban sovereignty.
