The Behavioral Insights Group presents Building Behavioral Design Teams for Public Good, a new series of talks with practitioners working in behavioral science units within governments and nonprofits to build and test solutions for social impact. This series will highlight how these units came about, how they work, and example projects.

This series forms part of the BIG Mentoring program. Through coaching and workshops, the program aims to build the participants’ capacity to establish behavioral design teams in their organizations that will leverage systems design thinking, behavioral insights, and innovative adaptive leadership frameworks in order to design more effective policies, programs, and services for complex social issues.

Allison Oakes is an advanced fellow in health services research at the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion at the Crescenz VA Medical Center and the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit. Allison uses a multidisciplinary approach to examine how varying financial, behavioral and organizational factors influence patterns of care utilization and the delivery of evidence-based and preference-sensitive care. Her research interests center around the measurement and improvement of health care quality and value, with an emphasis on the identification and elimination of low-value care. Her current research leverages insights from behavioral economics to design, implement, and test approaches to improve clinician and patient decision making. Allison holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in health services research and policy from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
